Cisco Brings AnyConnect VPN to Apple iPhone

As the Apple iPhone gains business prominence, the networking specialist extends its AnyConnect virtual private networking application to cover the demand.

Cisco Systems Inc. today announced that it has extended its AnyConnect virtual private network (VPN) technology to users of the Apple iPhone, an acknowledgement, the company said, of the increasing popularity of Apple’s smart phone in business circles.

Cisco’s AnyConnect Secure Mobility technology allows mobile smart phone users to establish a secure connection to their corporate network, to use enterprise applications, and interact with their desktop computers — all in a way that conforms to a company’s security policies.

Today’s announcement extends the AnyConnect VPN offering to mobile workers who have bucked the traditional business dominance of Research in Motion’s BlackBerry and opted for the

iPhone, which has made a big splash in consumer circles.

“With the AnyConnect Secure Mobility Solution, Cisco switches extends its support for devices that are becoming increasingly prevalent on corporate enterprise networks,” Cisco said in a statement today. The company has extended other instances of its VPN technology to Apple devices, but this is the first AnyConnect offering to do so.

A survey released today by CrowdScience, an online market research firm, supports Cisco’s assertion that Apple’s iPhone is gaining traction among business users. The researcher found that just 30% of BlackBerry users would buy another BlackBerry as their next phone, while 70% of iPhone users would choose another iPhone. And other mobility software providers have rolled out technology in recent months that caters to Apple iPhone users, including SAP’s Sybase unit.

Officially dubbed AnyConnect Secure Mobility Solution for Apple iOS 4.1, the Cisco router application works with the Apple iOS platform to establish a “highly secure tunnel automatically when enterprise-level protection is needed,” Cisco said in its statement. Communication over the VPN is secured via AES encryption that uses SSL (secure sockets layer) or DTLS (Datagram Transport Layer Security) tunneling. IT administrators can set access permissions for each user or group and lock down misplaced or lost phones.

Through its roaming capabilities, the Apple iOS 4.1application allows iPhone users to move among networks — from a cellular connection to a Wi-Fi network, for instance — without interrupting their access to enterprise applications.

The new AnyConnect Secure Mobility application is now available in Apple’s online App store, and works on Apple devices running iOS 4.1, which include the iPhone and the iPod Touch. It is a free application that works in conjunction with other Cisco technology, including a network firewall. The popular iPad device is not covered. Apple has said that its tablet wunderkind will join the iPhone and other Apple devices on iOS 4.2 in November.
